Conservation Mapping Landscape Classification

The landscape classification is a comprehensive map of all natural and modified areas on Galiano. Examples of natural areas include: Mature forest, Garry oak meadows, wetlands and streams. Examples of modified areas include: clear-cuts, roads, buildings, farms, and powerline corridors. The island was mapped at a 1 : 5,000 scale. If the landscape classification was printed at this scale, the island would be approximately eighteen feet long by almost four feet wide.

The landscape classification is based on the interpretation of 1998 aerial photography and has been updated using 2002 photos.

The map also integrates a variety of existing data such as the Sensitive Ecosystems Inventory for East Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands, Forest cover and road maps from MacMillan Bloedel, and several management plans for individual properties.

The landscape classification has many uses. Most importantly it provides insight about the current status of Galiano's wildlife habitat and is a valuable tool for conservation planning. It has also provided accurate mapping of roads for emergency response services on the island. It can aid in determining fire risk in our forests.

The maps listed below are based on the Landscape Classification and provide a summary of the status of Galiano's natural ecosystems.
