Aquatic and Riparian Ecosystem Restoration On Galiano Island
Aquatic and Riparian Ecosystem Restoration On Galiano Island

Greig Creek flows out of Laughlin Lake in the mid-island area of Galiano Island. The Creek runs for about a kilometer in length winding and splashing its way through majestic mature forest before slinking more gently through residential lands, under Porlier Pass rd. and out into Retreat Cove. Urban Salmon Habitat Program Assessment Procedures for Vancouver Island was used to survey and prioritize Greig Creek's ecological restoration needs. A number of restoration needs became apparent including low pool and Large Woody Debris values. Of more immediate concern were two old logging road creek crossings (wooden culvert construction) that were deteriorating and were identified as point sources of fine sediments entering the creek. The wooden logs used in the culvert construction were rotting causing the slumping of the overburden into the creek. The influx of sediment would decrease water quality and posing a suffocation risk to vulnerable salmon eggs buried in the Creek's gravels. Both roads were removed as part of the Ecological Restoration along Greig Creek.
