At Murchison Creek Galiano Island

Murchison Creek is the biggest Creek on Galiano Island. It is and exceptional system as it is habitat to the only resident cutthroat trout population on the Island. The Creek flows through very diverse habitat ranging from cleared, ditched pastoral land to old growth riparian forest. After surveying revealed trout fry left dry on the grasses of the field it was decided that the trout population would benefit from additional habitat. Restoration work was carried out by the Galiano Conservancy in 2001 with the intention of increasing the off channel habitat available to the trout. The ponds were to function as places to rear in the dry summer months and calm places to hide, during the high winter flows. Two off channel ponds were excavated with intake channels joining the main creek. These ponds were each quite different in terms of size and surrounding vegetation. Pond 1 was located in an pastoral Pond 2 was much field just beyond the thin riparian band of the creek. smaller and is located in a small stand of riparian forest adjacent to a residence. A riffle was constructed downstream from one of the ponds to create a hydraulic back pressure to ensure water would flow into the pond.A natural back pressure already existed on the lower pond.
